A multi-species household isn't a problem to solve — it's a balance to maintain. Each animal needs space, dignity, and an escape route.
Separate resources
Separate food bowls in separate rooms, ideally with the cat's elevated. Separate water sources too. Resource guarding flares up when shared resources are unclear.
Cat-only zones
At least one room or vertical area where the dog cannot follow. Cats need this even when they get along with the dog.
Managing mealtime and toy time specifically
Feed both animals at the same time in separate spaces rather than staggered, so neither is finishing while the other is still eating and hovering nearby. Keep high-value chews and toys picked up when not actively supervised — these are the most common flashpoints even in otherwise easygoing households.
Signs the balance is working
A relaxed cat who chooses to be in the same room as the dog, a dog who glances at the cat and looks away rather than fixating, and both animals sleeping without one watching the other are all signs the household has genuinely settled rather than just avoided conflict.
Most cat-dog tension comes from the dog being too interested. Teach a solid "leave it" and reward the dog for ignoring the cat. The cat will reciprocate over time.
