What the ongoing cost difference actually looks like
Beyond the initial setup, saltwater tanks need regular testing of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium alongside the usual parameters, plus higher-grade lighting for corals and often a protein skimmer running continuously. Freshwater upkeep, by comparison, is mostly water changes and basic filtration — a real difference in both time and recurring spend.
Most successful saltwater keepers started in freshwater. The principles transfer, the mistakes are cheaper, and you'll know whether the hobby is for you before spending serious money.
