A 90°F day is a different experience for a dog than for you. They cool themselves almost entirely through panting, which becomes less effective in humidity.
Adjust the schedule
Move walks to early morning or late evening. Skip midday outings in summer entirely if temperatures climb above 85°F.
Check the pavement
If you can't comfortably hold your hand on the sidewalk for seven seconds, your dog's paws can't handle it either.
Keeping the coat working for you, not against you
Regular brushing removes loose undercoat that traps heat close to the skin, letting air circulate more effectively. Resist the urge to shave a double-coated dog for summer — the coat also blocks direct sun on the skin, and shaving can do more harm than good.
Indoor alternatives on the worst days
On days too hot for a real walk, a short toilet break plus indoor games — hide-and-seek with treats, a short training session, a food puzzle — keep a dog occupied without the heat risk. It's not a full substitute for exercise, but it's enough to get through a heatwave safely.
Always offer shade and water on outings. Frozen treats and cooling mats help indoors. Watch for signs of overheating: excessive panting, drooling, bright red gums, stumbling.
